How is Anemia Treated? Send this page to a friend

If you are diagnosed with anemia of chronic renal failure, your medical team will likely prescribe a treatment to correct it.

There was a time when blood transfusions were the only treatment available for chronic kidney disease. Currently, chronic kidney disease can be treated with an erythropoietic protein. Erythropoietic proteins work by replacing and making up for the shortage of erythropoietin produced by the kidneys. Then the body can make more red blood cells.1,10

In addition, iron supplements are often required to treat renal anemia.2
