Iron plays a vital role in erythropoiesis--the formation of red blood cells. For patients with chronic kidney disease, maintaining a correct iron balance in the body is a key factor in managing anemia successfully. In fact, sufficient iron is essential, both for red blood cell production and in order for erythropoietic protein therapy to work effectively.2
Almost all patients receiving erythropoietic proteins will require iron supplements to increase or maintain their iron stores at an adequate level.20
Although iron poisoning is rare in adults, serious or fatal toxicity may occur in children.21 Be sure to keep iron, and all medications, out of the reach of children.
