Dietary Phosphorus

Many foods are high in phosphorus, which can cause problems for people with chronic renal failure because their kidneys cannot remove excess phosphorus from the blood. Many such people need to be on a special diet and/or on phosphate-binding medications. Phosphate binders are taken with meals, because they work by binding excess phosphate in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed into the blood. Your health care team will be able to advise you on your phosphorus levels, and whether a low-phosphorus diet or medications would be appropriate.
