Dietary Potassium

Potassium (K) is a mineral that can accumulate in the blood and cause potential problems for many people with kidney disease. However, some patients receiving peritoneal dialysis may require more potassium in their diet. Consider the following list of foods when planning your meals.

Grapes
Canned peaches, pears, apricots (drained)
Tangerines
Cherries
Apples or applesauce
Pineapple
Grapefruit (moderate K)
Cranberries
Green or wax beans

Broccoli
Carrots
Canned beets
Cabbage
Cucumber
Corn
Lettuce or greens
Zucchini
Peppers
Nuts
Peanut butter (in moderation)
Dried seeds, beans and lentils
Pretzels (high K only if whole wheat)
Bran cereal
Oranges and orange juice
Avocado
Bananas
Cantaloupe or honeydew melon
Fresh peaches, pears, apricots
Dried fruits
Rhubarb
Grapefruit, pineapple or prune juice
Brussels sprouts
Acorn or butternut squash

Processed meats (hot-dogs, cold cuts) (some fat-free, low-salt varieties may be high in K)
